Norway Denounces Hungarian Police Raids on NGOs

Norway said Tuesday that Hungarian police raids on the offices of civic groups critical of the government were unacceptable and showed Hungary is distancing itself from European democratic norms.

Police have been investigating several civic groups that distribute or receive funds from the Norway Grants, a program providing money to projects in areas such as environmental protection or social development in Hungary and other less-developed EU countries.

Hungary’s government says some of the groups have been misusing the money and spending some of it on anti-government activities.

One of the civic groups has admitted to organizing anti-government protests with funds from the Norway Grants, but the government’s complaints have been aimed mostly at groups like the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union, corruption watchdog Transparency International Hungary and Atlatszo (Transparent), a group of investigative journalists.

The HCLU said the police raids came after investigations earlier this year by the Government Control Office (KEHI) against Norway Grants’ recipients failed to find any evidence of wrongdoing.

“The aim is clearly to intimidate civil society and silence critical voices,” the HCLU said.

Várható volt, hogy ez a rendszer egyszer csak – mint nemzedékem ifjúkorában – rendőröket küld a valóságos rendszerellenzék nyakára, hogy a jard elhurcolja (előállítja, őrizetbe veszi, letartóztatja) a, bocsánat a közhelyért, szabadság kis köreinek bentlakóit, azokat a főleg, hála istennek, fiatal aktivistákat és militánsokat, akik tesznek is valamit a szerencsétlen magyar népért, amelyet az unalomig, a beletörődésig, a katatóniáig, a némaságig gyötör a rendszer. A rendszer és vezetői – és itt most terminológiailag csak Ady a megfelelő –, e „sírjukban is megátkozott gazok”.

A Nemzeti Nyomozó Iroda és a Készenléti Rendőrség (szívünknek kedves szavak ezek) elvitte Móra Veronikát, az Ökotárs Alapítvány igazgatóját, sor kerülhet az Autonómia Alapítványra és a DemNetre is. Volt – jellegzetesen tétova, politikailag bizonytalan, báva, nyájas, jámbor – tüntetés is, ahol a „baloldal” által budapesti főpolgármesternek jelölt, szédült, lunátikus humorista viccesen megjegyezte, hogy fagyizni is volt. (Ez az érzékeny humanista még több térfigyelő kamerát követel a fölforgató elemek, drogosok és színesek kordában tartására.) A Civil Rádió ijedten bizonykodott tegnap (hétfő, 2014. szeptember 8.) este, hogy az emberi jogi csoportok az Orbán előtti kormányok előtt is fölszólamlottak a jogsértések és miegyebek ellen. (Még szép.) Ma (kedd, 2014. szeptember 9.) reggel a Klubrádió – a szabad Magyarország hangja! – a házkutatás tök érdektelen részleteiről motyog valamit. Miért nem hagyták a hatósági eljárás alá vont (és folyamatba tett) személyt telefonálni? Mert kuss van, azért. Mert az ún. jogállamnak már rég annyi. Azért.

Antimodernizmus újratöltve

Haragos cikkek gyepálják a konceptualizmust, úgy, ahogy a 60-as évek elején az absztrakciót. Egyre hangosabban triumfál a Szabadság téren testet öltő esztétika. Miközben nem veszi észre: nincs harc.

Hogy miért éppen most látta elérkezettnek az időt némely sajtótermék, hogy sokévtizedes szövegeket előhúzva nekiessen a konceptualizmusnak, sőt, az absztraktnak (!), az nem teljesen világos. Talán megérezték: a hatalmon levők fülének édes ez a dallam. Vagy talán megszemlélték az új korszak új esztétikáját hordozó emlékműveket, az új rend által rendelt kiállításokat Budapesttől Pekingig, és azt szűrték le, amit a miniszterelnök oly plasztikusan fejezett ki nemrégiben: „könnyen lehet, hogy eljön a mi időnk”.

Tulajdonképpen el is jött. Új rend, új történelem, új esztétika. Az emblematikus mű ott áll a Szabadság téren, alkotója, Párkányi Raab Péter pedig, a Magyar Hírlap hasábjain vezet elő nagyívű konteót (Magyar művészeti maffia, MH, szept.5.). Az ádáz kurátorok és a nekik behódoló tanárok a műtárgyat tagadó, mindent romboló konceptualizmust erőltetik, a „semmi művészetét”, lám csak, már az egyetemen is, méghozzá azért, mert ez pénz és hatalom, cél a lefölözés, és persze a kirekesztés, mindazoké, akik „értékeket” képviselnek, akik itt „szabadon” szeretnének alkotni, akik még „magyarul érző és gondolkodó művészek”.

Norway asks EU to sanction Hungary

Tensions between Norway and Hungary escalated after the Nordic country on Thursday asked the EU to consider sanctions against the eastern European country.

A fight between the two countries broke out earlier this summer over funds donated by Norway to Hungarian charity groups. Hungarian government inspectors raided several non-governmental organizations it considered politically biased against the current leaders.

The Hungarian government for its part accuses Norway of giving money to organizations that finance the political opposition party LMP. Norway is withholding around 1.3 billion kroner ($210 million) in subsidy funds, a decision that has angered Hungary.

Museum workers in ‘disobedient’ protest

PCS members at the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum are holding a loud and colourful protest outside the central London museum tomorrow (29 August).

The protest takes place during the late opening for the V&A’s latest exhibition called Disobedient Objects – which the museum describes as “the first exhibition to explore the powerful role that objects play in grassroots movements for social change.”

Museum visitors will be greeted by our members and supporters in a lively street protest to highlight the issue of low pay and the lack of a decent pay rise for staff.

Pay restraint

Staff have been suffering from years of pay restraint – wages are down over 10% in the past 3 years, with no prospect of a decent increase under the current government’s pay policy. If pay had kept pace with inflation staff salary would be £2,300 higher than it is now.

The protest will take place outside the main entrance of the iconic institution in Cromwell Road, South Kensington, London from 6-8pm.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: “On salaries of £17,000 to £18,000, this sort of cut can really push people towards working poverty when London rent prices, transport costs and the cost of food are increasing.

“Rumours of privatisation also hang over every single staff member in the V&A. We believe that this will have a detrimental effect on the visitor experience, as well as a negative impact on London’s cultural success.”

At the protest visitors to the museum will be asked to sign a postcard to be delivered to professor Martin Roth, the museum’s director, to support the campaign for fair pay for his staff.

Vándorló metaforák. Nomadizmus és roma képzőművészeti reprezentáció a 20-21. században

„I just happened to mention, in all innocence [1]” – idézte fel előadásában Tom McDonough amerikai művészettörténész Maria Hlavajovával, a Call the Witness című kiállítás kurátorával, egy New York-i étteremben folytatott beszélgetésének részletét. Hlavajova a roma pavilon előkészítésének koncepciójáról mesélt, és a művészettörténész ekkor vetette fel Constant Nieuwenhuys, szituacionista építész nevét. Az ártatlan asszociáció végül további párbeszédek sorát, majd a pavilon építészeti designjaként is szolgáló műalkotást eredményezte. A kiállító teret kitöltő totális installáció egy olasz szinti közösség életteréül szolgáló, Constant által létrehozott építészeti modelljének kortárs építészeti interpretációja. Az interjú hallatán felmerült bennem a kérdés, mennyire mondható valójában ártatlannak McDonough Constantra tett javaslata, és milyen érvek sorakoznak a modellt központba állító kurátori döntés mögött. A Constant- illetve, az arra reagáló Arnout Mik művet integráló Call the Witness kiállítás kapcsán megfogalmazódó kérdések ösztönöztek a nomadizmushoz kapcsolódó művészeti reprezentációk természetének mélyebb vizsgálatára.

A „nomád cigány” toposz ikonográfiájának kapcsolódó motívumai gyakori elemei mind a romákat reprezentáló műalkotásoknak, mind a – részint az azokra reflektáló – önreprezentációknak. A dolgozatban azt igyekszem megvilágítani, hogy milyen ideák húzódnak a roma reprezentáció és a nomadizmushoz társított képzetek összekapcsolása mögött. A szituacionista modell előzményeként olyan modernista koncepciókat fogok elemezni, melyek segíthetnek megérteni a Constant modelljében megfogalmazott gondolatokat, majd pedig kortárs roma művészek munkáiban vizsgálom, hogy mennyiben változtatja meg a reprezentációs mechanizmust a szimbólum feletti kontroll átvétele.

Recommendations

To the U.S. Government

The primary responsibility for protecting the human rights of all persons in their territory lies with the governments of Greece and Hungary, and with their societies. However, U.S. leadership on human rights means prioritizing these pressing challenges to human rights.

Ten Things President Obama Can Do Now

  1. Adopt a policy to reverse Hungary’s backsliding on democracy and to advance the rule of law, independent democratic institutions, human rights protections, and greater transparency. This policy should be an integral part of the U.S. strategy to reinforce the Transatlantic Alliance in the face of Russian action in Ukraine and the growing electoral strength of antisemitic, racist, pro-Russian parties in E.U. states. In his September speech to the United Nations General Assembly, refute Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s notion that “illiberal” nations are better off economically and articulate the dangers that authoritarian regimes pose to peace, prosperity and fundamental freedoms.
  2. Call Prime Minister Antonis Samaras to: a) express support for his efforts to prosecute Golden Dawn leaders for operating a criminal organization and to purge the police forces of their accomplices; b) underscore the need for a credible prosecution of Golden Dawn that meets the highest European judicial standards and is not tainted by claims of political motivation; and c) offer assistance from U.S. law enforcement agencies to mount a credible prosecution and investigate Golden Dawn’s financial dealings, including outside Greece, and strengthen Greek law enforcement and judicial systems to combat hate violence, corruption, and abuse.
