EU Reding: Hungary Judicial Independence Trend is ‘Very Worrying’

BRUSSELS–The trend in Hungary away from judicial independence is “very worrying,” European Justice Commissioner Vivane Reding said Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters after presenting a report on EU justice systems based on data from 2010, Ms. Reding noted that at that stage Hungary was performing reasonably well.

“From the efficiency point of view, things were going rather well” in 2010 “so you can ask yourself why it was so indispensable to start all these reforms on the judiciary in Hungary,” she said.

Ms. Reding went on to say that concerns about judicial independence in Hungary have been “dramatically aggravated” since 2010. “The trend is very worrying.”
