Reacting to the adoption by the Hungarian Parliament of the new set of constitutional changes, Guy Verhofstadt, President of the ALDE Group in the European Parliamentsaid:
“It is time to finally see the Orban regime for what it really is – a government set on imposing the will of a majority over a minority and in so doing going against the values of the European Union.”
“President Orban has been warned many times that the values of the Union he joined are not to be abused or ignored. He has repeatedly been given the chance to make amends and rather than seeking compromise he has chosen confrontation.”
“I call on President Janos Adler not to sign the changes but rather refer the changes to the constitutional court for an in-depth examination.”
“In parallel, I call on the Commission tomorrow during its weekly College meeting to take immediate action and begin an assessment of the changes.”
“The Heads of State and Government must also raise the matter with Orban at their scheduled summit meeting this coming Thursday and Friday in Brussels.”
