Budapest – Tucked away on Hungary’s eastern fringe, the village of Gemzse lies in one of the European Union’s poorest regions.

Aber das geht vorüber.
Ungarns Studenten haben einen politischen Liebling: Jobbik, die rechtsextreme Partei des Landes. An der Eötvös-Loránt-Universität in Budapest hat sich dieser Rechtsruck unter den Jung-Akademikern zuletzt auf hässlichste Art und Weise gezeigt.
“Juden, die Universität gehört uns, nicht Euch” – solche Aufkleber klebten kürzlich überall am Lehrstuhl für Philologie an der Eötvös-Loránt-Universität in Budapest. An den Türen der Dozenten waren sie angebracht, auch an der der international anerkannten Philosophin Ágnes Heller. Als Absender stand auf den antisemitischen Aufklebern: “Die ungarischen Studenten.”
Der stellvertretende Uni-Direktor György Fábri ist entsetzt: “Das, was hier geschehen ist, dreht jedem normal Denkenden und Fühlenden – sei es Dozent oder Hörer – den Magen um. Es ist unverständlich – und kann nur aufs Schärfste zurückgewiesen werden.”

Was geschieht gerade in Ungarn?
Konrad Der aktuellen Regierung in Ungarn ist es gelungen, das Land zu spalten. Wir erleben derzeit den Kampf zwischen zwei Lagern.
Ungarn wird von einer rechtskonservativen Regierung geführt, die viele in der EU für gefährlich halten. Warum ist sie an die Macht gelangt?
Konrad Sie hat einen aggressiven Wahlkampf geführt, und die Gegner auf liberal-bürgerlicher Seite waren konfus. Zu diesem Lager zähle ich selbst. Wir wollten die Regeln der demokratischen, toleranten Auseinandersetzung nicht aushebeln, fanden zum Beispiel, dass auch jemand, der eine begrenzte Sicht auf die Dinge hat, in einer Demokratie zu Wort kommen sollte. Doch wenn sich dann gewisse politische Plattformen zusammenschließen und strategisch geschickt handeln, dann sind sie schnell an der Macht. Demokratien müssen sich immer erst festigen. Wenn die Leute diesen Geist noch nicht recht verinnerlicht haben, dann fehlt es an Widerstand gegen Kräfte, die alleinige Herrschaft anstreben.

A kárhozat nem színpadiasan érdekes és nagyszabású. Nem. Fölötte unalmas. Amikor a társadalom bűnbe esik – például eltűri különösebb morgás nélkül, hogy saját tagjainak egyharmada súlyosan nélkülözzön, egynegyede, közte több százezer gyerek, éhezzék és fázzék -, akkor csönd van, nem történik semmi látványos, a bulvárlapok tévészereplők magánéletéről írnak, vannak sikeres popkoncertek, folynak tudományos kutatások. Nincsenek félelmetes lángnyelvek, nincs kénkőszag, HR-szakértők ún. prezentációi az erélyes föllépés, a derűs arckifejezés, a bizalomgerjesztő testbeszéd, a személyre szabott érdeklődés előnyeit hangsúlyozzák. A lyukas tetejű faluszéli házakra hull a havas eső.
