An RT anchor announced on the air Wednesday that she would be resigning from the network. Liz Wahl said she could no longer be part of a network that “whitewashes the actions of Putin.”

Inspired by off-script remarks Tuesday by RT anchor Abby Martin condemning Russian action in Crimea, Wahl admitted today she has “many ethical and moral challenges” to wrestle with in continuing to work for the state-owned television network.

After talking about her own family history and what she’s heard of the “ultimate prices that people pay for this country,” Wahl announced she would be stepping down, effective immediately. “I cannot be part of a network funded by the Russian government, that whitewashes the actions of Putin. I’m proud to be an American and believe in disseminating the truth, and that is why after this newscast, I am resigning.”
