To H. E. Gajus Scheltema
Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Hungary
Dear Curator Koos van Duinen,
Dear Artist Friends from the Netherlands,
I must cancel my participation at Silence, a group exhibition of Dutch and Hungarian artists. The reason is that the gallery is supported by MMA, the Hungarian Academy of Arts. The Hungarian government invested the organization with supreme authority in the field of art, gave full powers to its leader, a man known for dictatorial, exclusionist views, provided them with an annual budget of HUF 4.5 billion, and handed over Műcsarnok, Budapest’s most important exhibition venue. The goal is to bring progressive art to its knees. As at the time of the communist dictatorship, those in power now try to legitimize their rule through an association with progressive international art, while supporting mediocre, obsequious local artists. The gallery of the Sensaria Association is sponsored in the framework of this politically motivated support policy. Please raise your voice against the ultra-right political dictatorship that currently reigns in Hungary.
